Poker: Narrowing a Range
The uneducated poker follower believes that the main point of the game is to guess the actual holding of your opponent, whereas the educated poker player understands that it is all about guessing your opponents range of hands.
A range of hands is the number of possible holdings your opponent could have, taking into consideration the action that has gone beforehand. The hand range changes as the action continues, and this is known as narrowing a range.
Narrowing an opponent’s range is a process of elimination that you use during each street.
Imagine that you have raised from the cutoff, holding [Ad] [Qd] and a tight, no-messing opponent has called on the button.
Both blinds fold, leaving you heads up to the flop. Now, before the dealer even lays down the flop, you should start to create a range for the types of hands that would flat in position like that.
Now, if stack sizes are deep, then he or she could flat with a wider range of hands but let us say we are 100bb deep: in this case, it would be sensible to remove AA-QQ and AK-AQ from his range, as these are hands he or she would likely three-bet with.
This is the process you go through when you start to define a range, and it is always widest pre flop.
Now, let us consider that the flop comes down [As] [4d] [6h]; you c-bet and he or she calls. You know this type of opponent is not floating you, so you can start to eliminate certain hands (bluffs) from his range, and it is this process that is known as narrowing a range.
